The decision was made after consultations with the president and the government of Poland. Earlier, the White House had confirmed that the United States was discussing with Poland the possibility of delivering these MiG-29s to Ukraine

Today it is very important for Ukraine to close its airspace or receive combat aircraft from international partners.
Poland is ready to transfer all its MiG-29 aircraft to the U.S. Ramstein Air Base immediately and free of charge and make them available to the Americans. Ramstein is the largest U.S. air base in Europe.
Instead, official Warsaw has asked the United States to provide Poland with used aircraft with similar operational capabilities. The European country is ready to immediately agree on all terms for the purchase of these aircraft.
Polish authorities are asking other NATO countries that have MiG-29 aircraft to do the same.
